Rio carried his mate back to the house rather than pop back. He loved the feel of the warm breeze and the glow of the moon. He couldn’t deny that his mate’s obvious power excited him and made him nervous all at the same time. With power like that, he could grow careless and then be hurt. Confidence could be a weakness for his precious mate.

His mate made some valid points, but all of that disappeared when Cass cuddled against Rio’s chest, his strength taking a back seat to his sweet submissive side. The sweet scent of his mate made him want to lock the man up and wrap him in cotton. Even if his mate could protect himself, he shouldn’t have to. Not to mention Rio noticed how tired Cass looked after.

He reached the house just as everyone was sitting down at the dining room table, enjoying chocolate ice cream. It felt like such a contrast to how this house always was before.

“Elin wants to bake your cake,” Dillon said. Rio wondered how the two communicated when Elin couldn’t talk, but felt it rude to ask.

“Mmm, cake,” Barry, the impala shifter, said. “Can it be fruity? I love raspberries. Oh! And lemon!”

Rio set Cass on his feet but continued to hold Cass close to his chest. He didn’t feel ready to let Cass out of his reach. Everyone sat at the table, all of his family and all of the rescued paranormals.

Finn sat off to the side, still shy. When Rio studied him further, he noticed the man shaking slightly. Rio made a mental note to talk to the fey later. Having Kat around should calm the poor kid’s nerves. Kat was royal fey and that should help the kid feel like he was with family. Fey were a close group.

“Why do they get a cake?” Simon, the penguin shifter, asked.

Dillon chuckled and ran his hand down Elin’s hair before kissing her forehead. The cute pixie beamed at her mate. “She really does love to bake.”

Cass stood a little straighter and Rio could feel his anticipation. Nervous energy rolled off his mate. “I would love for you to make the cake. We should plan it for tomorrow night.”

Rio couldn’t contain his laughter as his parents looked at him with mixed expressions of curiosity. Kat gripped his bowl of ice cream tightly over his swollen belly, but he hadn’t taken a bite since Rio entered, as if he might miss a second of excitement. Ian set his bowl down, but Rio knew he wasn’t really a fan of the cold treat to begin with. Asher just smiled at them, his eyes roaming all over the room, taking in every detail as if he might go back to being blind any second.

Rio wondered if the happiness he felt would last forever. Did all newly mated couples feel this happy? He could only hope. Heck, he wasn’t even mated yet, so it should only get better. Tomorrow night, according to Cass, he would know what it felt like to be completely bound to the fey.
